1994   MOPC Mutoko opens its doors to its first orphans

2001   A clinic is opened at MOPC, Mutoko

2004   MOPC UK is conceived

The Orphanage Mother of Peace Community, Mutoko, was founded and accepted its first children in 1994, following a prolonged search by 5 people from Harare who, on finding a suitable location were able to lease the land from the Government.

The orphanage is based on the precepts of the Roman Catholic faith: however it opens its arms to all, regardless of colour or creed. The orphanage and its community are situated about 100 miles east from Harare, towards the border with Mozambique.

It is recognised and listed as registered Charity by Zimbabwean authorities. The community is led by two Zimbabwean sisters, Jean and Stella Cornneck, who were trained as nurses in UK. As the Community has matured there have been strenuous efforts for it to become increasingly self sufficient. Towards this goal the building of a dam to secure a better water supply has allowed crop growing and animal husbandry.

Inside the ClinicThe recent crisis in Zimbabwe has devastated much of the effort – it lost its chicken project as a result of a complete lack of animal feed – but the will to regain the lost initiative is strong, once funds are forthcoming.

Children are taken into the orphanage by referral, placed there by relatives, well wishers or police, or struggle there by themselves. Increasingly young babies have been abandoned at the gate, reflecting the terrible situation of the last few years in the country. On arrival, acute malnutrition, chest and skins infections, diarrhoea and other symptoms of AIDS are prevalent. Also evident is confusion, fear and all too often displays of sexual and/or physical abuse. Where possible the origins of children are sought. Where this is impossible an identity and approximate DOB are given and registered.

On arrival at the orphanage the children are given as much physical, emotional, spiritual and practical support as possible to enable them to lead a happy and fulfilled life. A rewarding number of children have survived to adulthood and the reintegration of children into society is of growing importance. The community’s efforts in this domain have been recognised and extolled by Government authorities. The Communities aspirations to provide as full an education as possible, (often frustrated in recent years) have been recognised by Papal authorities in Rome with the promise to help provide a primary school on site.
